John Galen Howard photograph albums of University of California architectural projects [graphic]. ca. 1910-1922.

Cyanotype proofs and other photographs of plans, drawings, models, and completed buildings, with some black & white progress photographs of buildings under construction, architectural details, stonework, furnishings, etc. Vol. 1: the Hearst Plan for the campus, many views of Sather Tower, Wheeler Hall (exteriors and interiors), Doe Library (exteriors and interiors), the Agriculture Group (Hilgard Hall and Agriculture Hall, later named Wellman Hall), Gilman Hall (exteriors and interiors) and plans for the chemistry building -- Vol. 2: the Hearst Plan for the campus, general campus views, California Hall, the Hearst Mining Building, Sather Gate, Boalt Hall (later named Durant), the Greek Theatre, Department of Architecture (exteriors and interiors), and miscellaneous campus buildings, structures and monuments. Stadium and student union plans are also present. Non-university plans present are: the Lassen Union and Susanville Grammar Schools, and a Union Oil Co. building (Los Angeles) -- Vol. 3: Chiefly copies of plans and drawings for the stadium and a proposed hillside dormitory scheme of 1922. Also includes a few exterior views of Gilman Hall, and single views (chiefly plans) of various campus buildings and sites. Non-university plans include: hotels at Hollister and Pismo Beach, two churches, and the LeConte School.

A leader in the American Renaissance Movement, with special interest in the Beaux-Arts style, John Galen Howard came to California in 1892-1893. He was chosen to execute the Hearst plan for the University of California, Berkeley, and later founded the School of Architecture at Berkeley.
